Phoebe Bridgers Releases Inebriating Cover of ‘So Much Wine’

Since 2017, Phoebe Bridgers has released an annual Christmas song cover, in which all proceeds go to charity.

This year she has blessed us with a cover of the song ‘So Much Wine’ and is donating all of the earnings to the LGBT Center in Los Angeles, a non-profit organisation close to the California native’s heart.

‘So Much Wine’ is a track originally by The Handsome Family, a husband-and-wife musical duo who released the song in 2000. It entails watching a loved one’s relationship with alcohol become an addiction. The chorus “Listen to me, Butterfly/ There’s only so much wine/ That you can drink in one life/ And it will never be enough/ To save you from the bottom of your glass” gives listeners a look into the effects alcoholism can have, which is amplified by Bridgers version.

Phoebe Bridgers is no stranger to making her fans feel overcome with emotion at her music, and this cover is no exception. What is a Christmas folk song, becomes all the more meaningful with Bridgers’s mellowed, acoustic rendition, in which she used a team of backup vocalists, including the 28-year-old’s boyfriend, Paul Mescal.

This version of the song produces and enchanting element only Bridgers can adhere to. After rising into fame with her debut album ‘Stranger in the Alps’, the melancholy present in a lot of her work is what makes it so special. ‘So Much Wine’ is vastly different than a lot of Christmas songs people listen to, it cuts deep to the parts of ourselves we conceal during holiday festivities. Perhaps one day she’ll pull a Michael Bublé and produce a full Christmas album too!

Bridgers is set to feature on Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras Tour’ in 2023, with rumours of her third album being released around the same time.
