REC Syndrome Soundtrack The Pandemic With ‘Mascarilla’

REC Syndrome are an alternative punk rock band from Sitges, Barcelona. Self-described as, “a band that loves music just for the pleasure of making it,” taking inspiration from punk, alternative and grunge artists, including QOTSA, Nirvana and Iggy Pop’s band The Stooges.

After forming in April 2019, they burst onto the scene in October with the five-track EP ‘Piloto’, which was recorded in just two days and produced by the renowned Spanish indie producer Paco Loco.

They scheduled touring for 2020, but this was cancelled due to the pandemic, so they decided to return to the studio instead. The result of this was a 6 track EP titled ‘Plomo’ (which translates from Spanish as ‘Lead’), which was produced by their very own drummer Fabrizio Pinto.

Their latest track, titled ‘Mascarilla’, translates from Spanish as ‘Face Mask’. According to the band’s Bandcamp page, the single has been taken from the band’s upcoming album, for which the official release date has not yet been confirmed.

The track takes on a heavy alternative rock sound, with pounding guitars, clashing drums, and a thundering bassline. The song begins with a spoken word verse, before exploding into the chorus in which only a singular lyric is repeated with great urgency and insistence. The highlight of the song is its bridge, featuring passionate vocals laced with a gritty and aggressive tone before the track ascends into a screeching guitar solo.

The music video which accompanies the track depicts the band members wearing the iconic blue surgical Covid-19 face masks; which have become familiar to everybody throughout the pandemic. Both the song’s lyrics, which are performed in Spanish, and the music video are therefore influenced by and entirely relevant to everyone’s mutual experiences during the past year.
