The British-born multi-hyphenate talent (singer-songwriter, dancer and actress) originally set out to be a dancer (having danced in music videos for Ed Sheehan, Wretch 32 and Kylie Minogue) before deciding to pursue a career in music. FKA twigs officially introduced herself as an artist by releasing ‘EP1’ at the end of 2012 and ‘EP2” the following year. ‘EP2’ proved to be a game-changer; earning her multiple reviews and a nomination for the ‘BBC’s Sound of 2014’ prize (in addition to being chosen by Spotify for their ‘Spotlight on 2014’ list).
Her most recent album ‘Magdelwne’ - which she produced herself - was released in November 2019 and produced four singles. ‘Magdelwne’ was well-received by many upon its’ release, with ‘The Daily Telegraph’ journalist Neil McCormick writing: “‘Magdelwne’ is a magnificently twisted sci-fi torch album, an enthralling account of love, loss, heartbreak and recovery’.
The album also found its’ way onto multiple ’Best Albums of 2019’ lists; reaching the number one spot on the ‘Time’ magazine list. Regarding genre, ‘Magdelene’ contains elements of pop, opera, r&b, punk-rock, hip-hop, avant-garde and Bulgarian folk. However, the album itself has been described as “defying both genre and classification”. FKA twigs has been vocal in the past about how she herself defines her work, saying: “ I am not restricted by any musical genre”.
Her varied musical influences include Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Marvin Gaye, Siouxsie and The Banshees and X-Ray Spex.
FKA twigs has confidently steered her career since she first stepped onto the scene; directing and producing her own music videos, as well as producing her own music. She has also developed a reputation for her live performances; often highly stylised and artistic.The current climate hasn’t slowed her down either. When she wasn’t performing as a guest for Dua Lipa’s ‘Studio 2054’ virtual concert, she was on FaceTime working with collaborators for the new album she is now “finishing”.
FKA twigs is by far one of the most interesting and original artists of her generation. She has confidently carved out her own lane in an industry where many artists prefer to tread the trodden path without taking much creative risk. For music fans looking for an artist that can be perfectly summarised as “a breath of fresh air”…meet FKA twigs.
