From Dayton, Ohio, and now based in Nashville, the persona of MONA was created by artist, musician-producer, singer and songwriter Nick Brown. MONA burst onto the music scene with a bang when their eponymous debut self-titled album achieved the remarkable feat of earning a simultaneous nomination for the BBC Sound of the Year award and clinching MTV’s brand new accolade.
'Told Ya' is about the steps a person has to take in the pursuit of one's own aspirations and happiness. Opening slow and hazed, MONA begins by asking an enigmatic figure rhetorical questions where an answer is never given. The lyrics are thought-provoking and MONA’s performance oozes with emotion as expressed through the lyrics “Now you’re asking if I’m sober, no this is never over.”
The pace of the tune then begins to pick up, becoming upbeat and fully kicking into a pop anthem. What MONA cleverly does so well in ‘Told Ya’ is play with juxtaposition mixing together melancholy and contemplation to represent the highs and lows of life.
