Wolf Alice are set to play their biggest show to date next week, a huge homecoming show to round off an immensely successful year following the release of one of Music Is To Blame’s albums of last year, ‘The Clearing’. The four-piece indie rock band will be taking over Finsbury Park next Sunday, accompanied by names like Rachel Chinouriri and The Last Dinner Party.
In celebration of their full-circle moment, as they return to North London where it all started, we’re diving into the band’s history.
While Wolf Alice are best known for their explosive tunes like ‘Don’t Delete The Kisses’ and ‘Yuk Foo’, they started their run as an acoustic duo in 2010 with now-iconic frontwoman Ellie Rowsell and guitarist Joff Oddie. They played their first gig as a supporting act at The Garage, a 600-capacity venue in Highbury - only one tube stop away from Finsbury Park, where they’ll be playing to 50 thousand people, 16 years on.
Their first EP, ‘Wolf Alice’, was self-released the same year, after they decided to recruit a bassist and drummer to add the electric elements to their music that have come to define their sound. The two roles were originally filled by the pair’s friends before Theo Ellis and Joel Amey went on to replace their positions in 2012, making up the band as we know it today.
The band's first physical singles, ‘Fluffy’ and ‘Bros’, were released in 2013 under Chess Club Records. This was followed by two EPs, ‘Blush’ and ‘Creature Songs’, which led to various accolades for the quartet including “Best Breakthrough Artist” at the UK Festival Awards in 2014.
Since their breakthrough, the band’s status has been consistently ascending - from their debut album ‘My Love Is Cool’ charting at No.2 on the UK Albums Chart, to winning the Brit Award for British Group in 2026 most recently. Over the past 16 years, the four have redefined indie entirely, carving out space for more genre-blending, sensational sound. Their live performances are electric, with all four heavyweights delivering stage presence and energy through vocals, choreo and special effects. Finsbury Park is not one to miss.
