After proving themselves in the sweat-soaked local venues, scorched lungs, a Manchester-based band that prioritises the “live room” experiences, are trying to refine their studio sound with an upcoming new single ‘puncture wounds’. With roots in the heavy/desert rock scene, the band’s listed that their music is heavily influenced by artists like Queens of the Stone Age, Royal Blood, IDLES, and Arctic Monkeys.
This new track is set to be released on 26 June with the band’s multiple live performances at Manchester's The Castle Hotel and other venues lined up leading to the date, and it captures the band’s raw, high-energy stage presence. It bridges the gap between desert rock’s fuzzy distortion and the sharp, aggressive pace of modern post-punk. By avoiding overly polished production, the band keeps things gritty and personal. The sound hits with a force of a blunt instrument, mirroring the relentless, high-speed tension that makes their basement gigs so memorable.
On the other hand, the track is extremely chaotic when it comes to its lyrics. The band adopts an unhinged persona, shifting from grand boasts about being the “grandfather of evil” to intellectual nods towards Virgil’s Inferno. They keep the listener guessing by puncturing this dark, ego-driven posturing with deadpan, surreal humour—including an odd reference to a “turkey on my butt”—that shows off their flair for dark comedy. Under this bluster, however, there is genuine vulnerability. Through the imagery of being “high in the rope”, they reveal a sense of desperate humanity beneath the bravado.
‘puncture wounds’ portrays the band as a fresh, vital force in the UK rock scene. The track is a punchy recording of their live intensity, and proof that they are ready to break out beyond the local circuit. If this single is anything to go by, scorched lungs are just getting started, and their future looks just as unpredictable as it is exciting.
