Australian Singer-Songwriter Grace Cummings truly stuns with her new song ‘I’m Not Crazy’, the second single off her fourth studio album, ‘Bloodhorse!’ - set for release August 14th.
Working once again with her long-term producer, Jonathan Wilson, they challenge their previous records by shifting away from their established folk sound towards an electric-country blend. With crunchy synth lines and a haunting vocal lead, ‘I’m Not Crazy’ takes us on a journey through a toxic relationship, drowning us in a “violent fear” right along with Cummings.
Verses filled with threats of violence are contrasted by the repeated echoes of “I love you” and the name-calling of “baby.” As the story and music twine together, with romantic images of “candlelight” and “heaven” painted for us, we are also led into a false sense of security by the dreamy soundscape.
The music video, directed by Lucy Dyson, echoes these images of possession and perfection. With 1950s-inspired visuals, Cummings represents a woman made small by a controlling relationship.
The final lines of the song repeat “I love you, baby, love you, baby”. Is the story trying to convince us of this love or itself?
