Acclaimed singer-songwriter Beck has released ‘Ride Lonesome’, the latest single in what is arguably one of the most illustrious and diverse careers of the 21st century. Following his January EP, ‘Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometime’, composed of deep cuts and covers, the artist returns once again to a folksy, acoustic soundscape.
‘Ride Lonesome’ sees Beck reunite with the musical team behind ‘Sea Change’, 24 years on from the release that founded this mellowed folk string in Beck’s varied bow. Some fans say the single confirms a timeline theory, that we’re due the third installment of a stylistic trilogy, now 12 years since its second, the Grammy-winning ‘Morning Phase’.
This release is simplistic and stripped back, delivered like an advisory tale with resonant wisdom. His lyrics echo a reminder to listeners that the only way out is through. In a recent interview with NPR, Beck described his sentiment as that: “You just have to move forward through whatever landscape of your life and circumstances you find yourself in. And I think it's sort of that dark comfort of pushing through the parts of life that are maybe not as comfortable or easy, and having some distant faith that it will pull you through to the other side."
On ‘Ride Lonesome’, its soothing strings unfurl amongst aged vocals, rolling out like an open road. Though there’s no confirmed album on the horizon as of yet, Beck continues to take listeners along for the ride, a comforting classic of the industry.
