Producing soundscapes steeped in contemporary soul and lush jazz notes, Caitlin van den Bogaerde (known synonymously as Caitlin) is consistently proving that she's a pop-infused force to be reckoned with.
With the February release of her upcoming sophomore record ('Why's Everybody So Serious?' ) imminent, we chat with Caitlin about her musical origins and her desert island album picks as part of the Seven Questions with Music Is To Blame Series.
Introduce yourself and where you’re from.
I’m Caitlin, and I’m a singer/songwriter from the New Forest.
What do our readers need to know about you?
I grew up in the countryside, dancing and singing. After performing at school and writing with amazing artists on the weekends, I started singing in a band called S.O.L. Collective when I was about 21, where I fell in love with soul and blues, which is where I found my sound.
What have you got coming up that you’re most excited for?
Coming up - I’m most excited for my UK tour coming up in February and hopefully another one around Europe in April! I have my debut album 'Why's Everybody So Serious?' dropping on March 20th and a second one on the way!
What’s the best run-in you’ve had with a fan?
The best run-in with a fan was when we were performing in Paris recently. A girl approached me after the show, telling me she was in a bad place and the music we played made her feel so much happier, which really moved me and made me feel like I was doing something right!
What’s been your biggest ‘I’ve made it’ moment so far?
I think my biggest ‘I’ve made it’ moment was when I stood up at the first show in Paris, thinking it was gonna be like most shows where no one has a clue about who I am or what I write, but they were singing my lyrics along with me, which was a really special moment haha!
What are your three “desert island” albums?
‘Fancy’ - Bobbie Gentry
‘Tell Mama’ - Etta James
‘No Secrets’ - Carly Simon
Sum up your sound in three words.
Fierce, hopeful yet unforgiving (emotionally speaking).
