Cast and soul legend P.P. Arnold rock and roll back the years with ‘Poison Vine’, the first release from the Liverpool indie band’s upcoming album, ‘Yeah Yeah Yeah’.
As good as ‘Tin Soldiers’, Arnold’s collaboration with London rockers Small Faces from the late sixties, the soul veteran interjects nicely throughout but combines beautifully with Cast vocalist John Power for the chorus, providing the oomph that ensures it is truly rousing.
The song appears to be about a breakup, with one of the relationship’s participants becoming bitter and being left to reap the “fruit from a poison vine”. Musically, however, it feels typical Cast, albeit a slightly more mature version of the group.
The main riff during the verses is reminiscent of David Bowie’s ‘Queen Bitch’, but once Arnold’s powerful pipes, supported by the horns, hit, the gospel vibes leave you feeling as if you could be rocking your Sunday best in the local church as the soul legend shows you she has very much still got it.
This might be Cast’s first release on Manchester independent Scruff of the Neck, but if the rest of the album, scheduled for January next year, is in the same vein, fans of the band are in for a real treat.
