Embrace ‘21st Century Hobb[ies]’ and stream Oscar Lang’s latest hit

Oscar Lang’s latest single ‘21st Century Hobby’ describes social media obsession and the fast pace of modern living through a range of melodic dynamics sure to appeal to fans of traditional indie rock.

The third single from Dirty Hit features on Lang’s debut album, set to be released later this month.

'21st Century Hobby’ is “a tune based on the idea of society’s obsession with sharing your life online and comparing yourself to other people” explains Lang in a recent press release. He also shares that the song was inspired by his own struggles with separating social and real life.

There was one point where I was spending 13 hours a week on social media, which equated to about a month every year. That was a really dark time for me- I always thought that it would never affect me, but it took some time to realise that it was subconsciously affecting my mental health”.

This revelation becomes apparent from the opening lyrics “Fake friends / Living life to pretend / New trends / Only fun til they end”, accompanied by melodic guitar riffs before exploding into a heavier indie rock tune and a quicker pace.

The lyrics throughout the song remain authentic to Lang’s own struggles and acts as an all too accurate social commentary. Even the catchy rhymes of the chorus describe the deeper meaning of internet addictions: “Behind the glass the people watch / They laugh they cry they can’t switch off / Oh, so beautifully odd it’s a 21st century hobby”.

The background keeps the single light and uplifting, clearly influenced by Northern indie rock and demonstrates Lang’s musical ability to effortlessly intertwine psychedelic flourishes with traditional guitar riffs, all beneath a modern rock undertone.

Lang’s debut album ‘Chew The Scenery’ was recorded in Liverpool over just a month. With an already impressive discography: producing beadadoobee and Powfu’s ‘Death Bed (Coffee For Your Head)’ and praise from BBC Radio 1’s top DJs, the album holds high expectations.

“[Recording the album] was a nice break away from the tedious lockdown in the UK as I got to spend a month away with my mates doing what I love. I think you can hear that built-up boredom being released on the record” says Lang.

‘21st Century Hobby’ is available to stream on all major platforms and Oscar Lang’s debut album ‘Chew The Scenery’ will be released on the 16th of June from Dirty Hit records.
