Having opened for Stereophonics, Ratboy, and his older brother George Ezra on tour, Barnett’s career has gone from strength to strength over the past few years. His latest single ‘Everything You Got’ takes listeners on an exhilarating guitar-fuelled journey of joy.
Ten Tonnes has drawn comparisons with The Kooks and Sam Fender, due to his guitar-driven tendencies and recognisable vocals, but mentions Elvis Costello and Tom Petty as his personal inspirations. His previous single ‘Girl, Are You Lonely Like Me?’ speaks to Petty’s brand of blues-rock, but this anthemic new outing is more akin to 1970s power pop. In ‘Everything You Got’, Barnett combines infectious riffs with an intoxicating standout chorus that encourages the listener to ‘shake it and roll it, twist it and lock it’.
The commanding lyrics paired with the euphoric mix of guitars create an atmosphere of escapism and provides a sense of optimism which is decidedly fitting as England eases out of lockdown. Meanwhile, his vocals are not dissimilar to Declan McKenna, as he commands ‘c’mon c’mon c’mon give me everything you got!’
Unlike his previous music, Barnett is now releasing songs through his own label Silver Heat Records, and it seems that he has more creative control, allowing his interests to shine through. ‘Everything You Got’ explodes into its opening with a mix of acoustic and electric guitars, demonstrating an uplifting tone from the outset. The jubilant melody and accompanying visualiser provide further proof of the retro aesthetic which Ten Tonnes is perfecting recently.
It is no wonder that Ten Tonnes made Radio X’s Great X-Pectations shortlist in 2019, as his latest endeavor cements his position as one of the UK’s most exciting talents.
