EMMMA explains on social media that ‘Experiment’ is about ‘being used as a lab rat’, demonstrated by a catharsis of screams and shouts over choppy, pulsing drum breaks. In equal parts spiteful and yearning, EMMMA fantasises, "In another life we’ve made it / Where it’s you and I / Instead of your experiment". The track’s chorus is wrapped in layers of pining vocal harmonies, soaring over beds of glimmering synth pads and slinky guitars laid out by producers Nydge and Erick Serna.
The song reflects the growing Generation Z/Millenial modern dating disillusion, with lyrics like "Cause my door’s been open / I could have closed it" that give Chappell Roan’s ‘Casual’ a good run for its money, perfectly capturing the feeling of self-destructive compromise for another’s desires.
It comes as no surprise that EMMMA is supporting alt-pop band MUNA on the UK & EU leg of their Gets So Hot Tour, with the track’s electronic-pop sensibilities easily fitting in with the sonics of the band’s album ‘Dancing On The Wall', released this spring.
