System of a Down is a genre-bending metal band that has certainly stood the test of time. Their 2001 album ‘Toxicity’ is a well-respected and loved staple of the alternative community. Nine years after their last UK appearance, the group returned with a two-night stint at London's Tottenham Stadium. The evening was packed full of vibrant visuals, incredible musicians, and the loudest crowd I've ever heard.
The headliners aren't the only band of the night that fans have been waiting for. After a seventeen-year hiatus, Acid Bath are back and opening up the night. Whilst I only got to witness the last couple of songs, they were a solid first opener. Their five-song performance delivered the sludge metal vibes they are known for.
Queens of the Stone Age did a great job of warming the crowd up. Their setlist was packed with fan favourites like ‘No One Knows’ and ‘Go With The Flow’. The visuals were constantly changing, full of distorted effects and bright colours. This added to what felt like a very atmospheric and interesting set. At one point, a song was scrapped and replaced with 'Run, Pig, Run', which has been a staple in their current tour.
There was a sense of anticipation hanging over this gig, as it was the headliner’s first UK appearance since their 2017 European tour. Rumours have often circulated about their return; however, most fans were sceptical. I’m pleased to report that this long-awaited return was everything fans could’ve hoped for. When Serj Tankian waltzed onto the stage, the crowd went absolutely crazy. They began the night with 'B.Y.O.B,' and from that moment on, everyone watching was hooked.
This may have been one of the liveliest crowds I’d ever seen. Right away, most people standing got out of their seats to dance and cheer. Their set was a beautifully curated selection of great songs. It felt as though there were no fillers and no lull in the energy. 'Toxicity' was a clear theme throughout, with almost all of its songs played. 'Forest' was a personal highlight. It's tracks such as this that prove Serj is as good a vocalist as he's ever been. If anything, he seems better than ever at what he does. The entire band was tight from beginning to end. Even better still, they all seemed to absolutely love every minute.
Even as the final song, 'Sugar', was played, the floor was a sea of mosh pits. This much-loved band has managed to keep their loyal fanbase close right from the beginning of their career, and the payoff was demonstrated tonight. Here's to hoping System of a Down return to the UK once (or a few times) more.
