Lucia & The Best Boys Are All the Better for Dropping ‘Better For The Worse’

One of Glasgow’s finest indie rock bands, Lucia & The Best Boys, have continued to tease what to expect from their upcoming album, ‘Picking Petals’ (out July 31st). This time, by dropping the new single ‘Better For The Worse’.

It is a track fuelled by sensual, acoustic guitar riffs which beautifully accompany lead singer Lucia Fairfull’s smoky, textured, yet cathartic high soprano vocal. This helps deliver reflective and clever lyrics, such as: “This chemistry was built on nothing but your wicked game”, with stupendous precision and soul.

‘Better For The Worse’ comes in at around four minutes long and Fairfull is commanding in her execution of every single note, so listening to her is nothing but a joy. The track is catchy too with a chorus that is dramatic yet funky.

The track has been branded by many as being Fleetwood Mac-esque. It certainly has the tension of a 1970s Woodstock-inspired Mac number but do not be fooled, ‘Better For The Worse’ is very much secure in its own identity.

In fact, after a few listens, it is fair to say that, in some places, this track is just as refreshing as a Fleetwood Mac number. The reason being that Fairfull’s diction and tone are centred around her Glaswegian vernacular.

She proudly sports her broad Scottish accent throughout, allowing it to inflect every single word she sings with pride. This dovetails nicely with a trend she started on the band’s debut album ‘Burning Castles’, whereby they embraced the use of bagpipes and bodhrán drums. Thus, creating their own Celtic-indie-rock sound.

The release of ‘Better For The Worse’ couldn’t come at a better time for Lucia & The Best Boys, as it comes as the band prepares to perform at a handful of venues across the UK, as part of their biggest headline tour to date.

The tour will include the biggest show of their career — a hometown headline performance at Glasgow’s hugely iconic Barrowland Ballroom, on October 23. This is a huge moment for Fairfull, with the Barrowland being a place her grandparents once danced in and where she supported world-famous Scots-pop icons, the Bay City Rollers, back in 2015 on their Rollermania Reunion Tour.
