Seven Questions With Cannons

With the recent release of their fifth full-length studio record, 'Everything Glows', we chat with Michelle Joy, lead vocalist of Cannons, about "I've made it" moments, fan run-ins, and her desert island album picks as part of the Seven Questions with Music Is To Blame Series.

Introduce yourself and where you’re from.

I’m Michelle Joy from Cannons. We’re a band based in Los Angeles, CA. I’m originally

from Florida, but I’ve lived in Los Angeles for quite a while now.

What do our readers need to know about you?

I think the main thing to know about me is that I follow feeling over anything else. I’ve spent a lot of my life trying to make sense of things through music. Writing is usually how I find the shape of something I couldn’t explain any other way. I don’t always know what I mean at first, sometimes the song knows before I do. I think I’m always listening for whatever feels the most true, even if I can’t fully explain it yet.

What have you got coming up that you’re most excited for?

Our new album, Everything Glows, came out March 27th, and a US tour starting March 31st.

What’s the best run-in you’ve had with a fan?

The most memorable ones are the people I’ve met who’ve told me our music helped them through really difficult moments, or even saved their life. That’s always hard to fully take in but it means a lot, especially because I’ve leaned on music in that same way, and to be able to do that for others means the world to me.

What’s been your biggest ‘I’ve made it’ moment so far?

When we played Coachella, I remember wondering what kind of crowd we’d have. Then I stepped on stage and looked out at the crowd, and it just kept going, people pouring out of the Gobi tent as far as I could see. It was right at sunset, really beautiful. People had signs and were singing every word back to me. It all felt kind of surreal. That was definitely one of those moments that really stuck with me.

What are your three “desert island” albums?

'Love Deluxe' - Sade

'Heaven or Las Vegas' - Cocteau Twins

'Rumours' - Fleetwood Mac

Sum up your sound in three words

Dreamy, nostalgic, cinematic.
