Announced by the grandeur of a church organ and a literally out of this world release, Muse embark into a new era with the electronically charged single, ‘Be With You’. Streamed from heights of 33km in partnership with Sent Into Space, the release enters a chapter supplanted in experimentation and an untamed curiosity of the unknown. The unknown, in this instance, is the planetary expanse and the mystery that comes with it.
Matthew Bellamy’s vocals show that, while this might be the band’s tenth studio album, they are far from subduing their sound. In fact, he sounds as good as ever as he holds the sustained notes of the tracks’ verses, moving between vulnerability and cathartic defiance as the lyrics search for human connection.
With a flourish of guitar and crystalline piano, it’s guided by an electronic pulse that carries the track, with the addition of synths drawing on the futuristic thematics of the song’s arrival. After all, it truly wouldn’t be Muse if there wasn’t a dash of the dramatic.
For some, the track may feel somewhat tame, especially in comparison to the anticipation created around its release. But what it does exceedingly well is draw on the elements fans know and love about the band and bring it into a new, highly conceptual era. If ‘Be With You’ proves anything, it’s that Muse are reaching for new sonic heights in their new release, figuratively and literally.
‘The WOW! Signal’ is due for release on June 26, via Warner Records.
