DMA’S have returned with their first track in two years, ‘My Baby’s Place’. In the midst of celebrating ten years since their debut album, ‘Hill’s End’, the release marks a new era for the band.
With rich, dreamy soundscapes and reverbed guitars reminiscent of indie shoegaze, the track sounds warm and nostalgic, feeling familiar in its catchiness, like it could’ve been released a decade or two ago. Its simplicity in sound is what makes it so effective, creating an anthemic track characteristic of DMA’S, one that feels perfect for spring and summer.
The track is also lyrically concerned with looking back, repeating “rewind, rewind”, the complicated relationship between the past and present permeating throughout. It is torn between a place of uncertainty and vulnerability in its verses, and certainty and confidence in its hooky chorus.
The Official Music Video, directed by Cole Surrey and Theo Renner, makes this more apparent, showing a young friendship group smoking in the sun, dancing, cartwheeling, and partying, then “rewinds” to show the memories with the protagonist’s partner in them. It is a visually gorgeous representation of carefree friendship, the bittersweet feelings of longing, and the difference a person’s place in memories can make.
‘My Baby’s Place’ is entirely self-produced by the trio, Tommy Odell, Johnny Took, and Matt Mason at their studio in Sydney. It serves to signal a movement in how the band approach their work, which opens up exciting new creative horizons for them to build on their already successful discography.
