Lime Garden delve into the world of relationships with their gorgeous new single ‘Downtown Lover’. Taken from their upcoming album ‘Maybe Not Tonight’, which is expected to be released on April 10th, it showcases a different sound for the band.
Everything has been stripped back to the basics here. Three chords replace all the usual technical riffs, and thanks to Annabel Whittle, the simple drum beat grabs your attention. It’s impressive what the Brighton quartet can create with seemingly so little. Chloe Howard’s bewitching vocals mean that listeners can’t help but fall in love with what’s being presented to them. It’s easily catchy (as proven by the repetition of “I’m a downtown lover” at the end and the group backing vocals, which are sprinkled throughout), helping to get fans excited for what’s to come.
Lyrics detail the fear of delving into a serious relationship “I like the way that we are, I like it most because we’re always apart / I know you want your freedom, the way that I want mine”, the avoidant attachment style that many can relate to. 'Downtown Lover' is honest, and that’s what makes it so good.
‘Downtown Lover’ is a song that you can let your hair down to and sets up ‘Maybe Not Tonight’ to be, potentially, one of the best releases of this year.
