King No-One return with their latest song ‘Scumbag’ ahead of their debut album ‘The Burden Of Empathy’, which is set to be released on the 26th of April.
The track takes on a slightly different route from previous releases, including ‘Turkey Dinosaurs’ and ‘Blake’, but that difference is what makes it (and the band as a whole) so exciting. There’s an anger which shapes the track, as heard by the punchy drums which rattle you to your very core. The band are clever with it though, balancing out this fury with a certain jauntiness to make sure it’s not too overwhelming. The synth-pop style intro (courtesy of Joe Martin) draws listeners in, before Zach Lount’s seductively addictive vocals pierce the track, helping to create something that listeners keep wanting to revisit.
The Leeds-based lads have never been one to shy away from writing about current issues and ‘Scumbag’ follows suit. Talking about the track, Lount eloquently frames it as:
"Money and income is often the bar of which we are judged, and people dedicate their lives chasing it, sacrificing their relationships, their freedom and experiences to get it. But at what cost?‘Scumbag’ is about accepting our struggles and what we may lack in financial wealth, we make up for in love of those around us and our lived experiences.”
For such a powerful message, the lyrics truly help to hammer it home “I’m just a scumbag / money don’t talk, it burns”. Alongside this, Rob Gration’s thumping bass propels the song forward and makes sure ‘Scumbag’ stays in your head well after it’s finished.
It’s clear to see that the alt-pop trio are only getting started and with ‘The Burden Of Empathy’ coming soon. ‘Scumbag’ sets it up to be one of the most memorable releases of 2026.
