Glaswegian singer-songwriter Lizzie Reid teases her upcoming EP ‘UNDOING’ (17th April) with haunting new single ‘Sweet Relief’ featuring fellow Scot Hamish Hawk. It leans into a darker side of the musician, carving out a different path that cult hits, including ‘Always Loving’ and ‘Mooching’, have formed.
Andrew Pearson’s industrial guitars give the song its trademark grit, which listeners can’t help but fall in love with, and Gavin Lamont’s raucous drum beat helps to let ‘Sweet Relief’ nestle itself nicely into Reid’s discography.
The lyrics “sweet relief before darkness descends on me / to live in pain again, shame again, bigger than ever before / I am your fool” paint a picture of desperation, the innate need to be comforted, even if all attempts will only lead to more hurt. The repetition of the latter line makes this brutally clear, but her and Hawk’s vocals help to balance out the heaviness of the song. The breathy quality is sweet like honey, ensuring that listeners want to keep coming back for more.
‘Sweet Relief’ is one of those songs that are designed to be played on stage, in front of mass crowds who are left reeling from the beautiful destruction that Reid has left in her wake.
