Hip-hop Trio Kneecap Release New Single

The Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap have returned with the second single off their upcoming album ‘Fenian’. Known for political messaging within their music, their new song ‘Smugglers & Scholars’ is no exception.

Like many of the group’s previous tracks, it’s a call to action that reflects on the Irish revolution, with a sense of aggravation at the current state of world politics. It’s a representation of their own experience over the past several years, with their actions watched by the government, causing much controversy between politicians and fans.

The sound is consistent with much of their previous work, utilising electronic sounds as the base instrumental. The bassline has heavy intensity with drums that have a metallic quality to them, and a bass riff with a similar sound to static.  It blends the Irish and English languages throughout the lyrics, which is a core part of Kneecap’s philosophy as artists.

Kneecap never censors their work; the tone of the piece is consistent with their political messaging beyond their music. The repetition of the phrase “Smugglers & Scholars” appears to bring together all people to unify the fight against oppression in Ireland. Yet their idea is not singular, and their voice is applicable across the world. Their album ‘Fenian’ comes out on April 24th.
