Chalk have been redefining what Irish post-punk means in the 2020’s, switching it up from the typical rambly gothic vocal accompanied with a decent bass line, releasing singles here and there for the past four years, spreading their musical gospel in Ireland and beyond, even supporting Fontaines D.C. at Belfast Vital last August. On Friday, ‘Tongue’ was released, the final single before the release of debut album ‘Crystalpunk’, out March 13th.
We kick off the track with whispery vocals that build up to a cathartic drop around half a minute in, where there is a complete transformation. This beat could very well accompany a crowded room dancing through a friendly mosh.
Overall, this track, although it may have some impassioned lyrics and screams of indignation, is honestly just a fun, lively aspect reminiscent of the likes of LCD Soundsystem. This is a meticulous first track pick for the upcoming album, as it introduces the charm of Chalk incomparably.
Chalk are set to be dotted around the UK and Ireland for a mini tour in April and May, finishing it all off with a support slot for Idles at Custom House Square, Belfast. Check them out, you won’t regret it.
