Lyrically, the song captures the honest, imperfect, self-love side of Lily that we have been waiting to see. Instead of Lily overexplaining her thoughts, she leaves it up to the listener to project their own experiences into the track and connect deeply and emotionally. “Trynna be somebody I like / Yeah I’m still like a work in progress” communicates her unsaid feelings throughout her self-love and healing process throughout the last year.
Vocally, Lily delivers with restraint, bringing this track to life emotionally. There’s a softness to her vocal which blends with the emotions and upbeat pop production in harmony. She doesn’t outshine the track; instead, the subtle tone and phrasing balance beautifully. The production is minimal but ideal, supporting the vocals without battling with them.
‘hi’ stands out not because of its dancey beat and dramatic vibe, but because the meaning is much deeper personally to Lily and the listener. It’s a song for the overthinkers, who stay up till 2 am doom scrolling, and Tate McRae fans.
Gia Lily proves that you can still be a work in progress at the same time as looking like you have your life together.
