Courtney Barnett has recently released a music video alongside her latest single 'Site Unseen’, featuring Waxahatchee as part of her upcoming album ‘Creature of Habit’, which is set to be released March 27th.
The opening lyrics discuss the idea of being a “creature of habit”, considering the idea of wanting to change them yet still being stuck in your ways “Always getting in my own way /” Is it too late for making any changes?”.
The timing of this release feels suitable, being released mid-January after most of us have tried, and failed, to implement those New Year's resolutions, falling back into old habits, making for a relatable track. We repeatedly hear the narrator questioning her own choices and wanting to get her “head together”. Whilst the words themselves are deep, the melody and overall sound of the song are more upbeat and bright, creating lyrical dissonance.
The accompanying music video, directed by Giraffe Studios, has an intentional dream-like feel to it, invoking a sense of nostalgia due to its retro-colours and the direction itself having a Wes Anderson feel to it, as pointed out by viewers. Overall, this being the lead single for the album makes perfect sense; the indie-upbeat sound paired with lyrics discussing a deeper, mundane feel encompasses the message that the upcoming album is putting across.
