Cherry i Explore Art And Defeat On 'Mistake'

London-based art-rock quartet - hailed for their adventurous forays into folk-leaning rock - Cherry i are brandishing a sword against defeat and the tumultuous relationship it has with careers in the artworld.

Following on from the soulful intonations of their previous cuts, 'The Arsonist' and the haunting 'Alaska', their newest release, 'Mistake', ultilises pleading vocals and stripped-back moments to drive home the substantial and emotive narrative.

Shining a light on the often-spurious and tempestuous nature of the music industry, Cherry i unravels the exasperation that can accompany pursuing your dreams ("The sun rays are filled with disease / My hopes are lost in you"),  in a fraught and raw account of being an up-and-coming band.

Discussing the lyrical content of the track, lead vocalist Nikol divulges that, "The idea behind the song is essentially a one-way conversation between a person and something inanimate, in this case it is the fraught relationship one can have with music and choosing that as a career path...".

Featuring purposefully layered instrumentation comprised of leftfield guitars, and grunge-filled percussion - the soundscape is pulled together by the lush, productive talent of Ali Chant (PJ Harvey, Soccer Mommy). Where 'Mistake' exemplifies the band's strong songwriting prowess is in its quieter moments; the track gives way to highlight imploring, stretched-out, quavering vocals, allowing them to take the spotlight.

A cathartic and enigmatic underscoring of the downfalls of being a creative, 'Mistake' is an impressive and intrepid offering from the London polymaths.
