Titled ‘Down The Road’, this latest song offers us a slight twist on what we are used to from Black Sands. Instead of his classic merge into an upbeat sound following a slower initial tempo, this offers an almost entirely steady beat. It lets us ride the wave of a speaker finding themselves, realising the strength of independence, and knowing themselves wholly and entirely. He sings “I learned everything that I need to know/ By spinning my wheels until they start to lose control”, compelling lines prioritising autonomy and self-sufficiency above reliance on anybody. It is a vulnerable move to make, and one that pays off handsomely.
He similarly tells this story to musician Zach Bryan, an artist he discusses as being influential to his own creations. It’s soft, warm, and yet still entirely compelling. The gentle nature with which he tells this tale of self-love perfectly coincides with the beautiful music behind his voice. Its drum beat remains steady, grounding the piece, as the guitar fades in and out with constant chords that lift up and set down the tempo as needed.
Overall, it is a step outside of the expected from Black Sands, a jump into new horizons that marks the beginning of a new chapter. This track is an exploration of the self, a lyrical investigation into putting oneself before others without tarnishing a relationship. There’s room for others in your own life, but never at the detriment of yourself. Be you, be great, and be proud.
