‘terminal’ is the newest single from Wotts, a song about uncertainty through moments of doubt and an inner conflict.
Wotts are an unclassifiable duo from Ottawa, known for dabbling in synth-pop while constantly refreshing their sound. Their recent releases lend themselves towards alternative rock, indie pop, and subtle R&B influences. Their music carries both warmth and unease, capturing highs and lows through a polished and impeccable sound.
‘terminal’ evokes ‘Blurryface’ by Twenty One Pilots through its emotional complexity and sonic experimentation. The track opens in a cold, hazy soundscape, built on swirling synths that create a sense of detachment. This is quickly contrasted by the presence of a funky bass line and Jayem’s vocals, which inject a contrasting warmth. It’s this interplay between the synthetic and the human that gives the track its underlying emotional tension.
The percussion is especially compelling. Pounding, static-like drums drive the track forward, creating unexpected fluidity. Flickering keys weave in and out of the rhythm, adding to a melodic push-and-pull between brightness and melancholy.
‘terminal’ is a clear demonstration of Wotts’ willingness to experiment while still maintaining their signature sound, cleverly using production to lean into disorientation and clarity.
