On Thursday night, Mimi Webb took to the stage at Manchester Academy, her final stop of The Confession’s Tour had finally arrived.
Quickly making a name for herself through social media, Mimi has now shared her ‘Confessions’ with the world through her sophomore album. Known for her emotionally charged ballads and classic pop anthems, Mimi has created a dedicated fan base that is drawn to her relatability and authenticity - enough so that fans had queued up all day outside the venue for the gig.
As the crowd poured in, they sang along to the music playing throughout the venue, creating a shared moment before the show had even properly begun. Suddenly interrupted by the dimming of the lights, support act Grace Gachot was ready to take the stage. Wearing a stunning silk dress and robe, she was ready to lay her feelings bare through her songs. Joined by Alex Hollingsworth, the pair created an emotional connection with the audience instantly.
The performance of 'The Boy Who Can’t Be Named', created an ethereal moment, where the crowd fell silent and Grace’s voice could float across the venue. An atmosphere that only continued to grow, as she welcomed us into her world, not just through the backstories to her songs but her lyrics themselves. For ‘Flatlining’ she lay on the floor to completely sing her heart out, a track all about the feeling of finding out you’ve been cheated on. It was raw and unfiltered, her voice carrying the power to connect and draw the audience into the pain she had experienced.
As she left the stage, she was met with fans waving and calling her name to get her attention — a clear sign she’d won them over.
A platform on stage was revealed, surrounded by two curtains, it was obvious exactly where the crowd's favourite singer was about to appear. The lights went off, and the stage was engulfed by smoke. A silhouette of Mimi could be seen as the intro to ‘Kiss My Neck’ began to play, accompanied by screams. In true pop star fashion, she enticed the crowd with dramatic yet elegant poses before she swung into ‘Love Language’.
Her energy throughout the night was unstoppable, making it almost impossible to stand still. Combining distorted instrumentals with strobe lighting made her performance feel so much more amplified; it wasn’t just about singing your favourite songs, it was about having a party together and enjoying every second. A lot of her tracks, particularly ‘Mistake’, would build up throughout until unleashing a powerful and soaring chorus that shifted the mood of the entire venue.
A staple of her tour has been hearing confessions from the crowd, of course named after her album. The trade-off for a confession was a free shirt, but since it was the last night of tour Mimi chucked some extras into the crowd as well. A mic gets handed to a lucky crowd member, and she begins to say how she honestly just wanted a free shirt, but she’d had a tough time even getting to the venue and then waited around 7 hours outside — incredible dedication all for Mimi. It was plain to see everyone in the room adored her, whether they’d waited outside all day or not; there were constant shouts of “I love you” coming from every direction in the room. Of course, this segment came to a close with the song ‘Confessions’, an open and honest track where she yearns for wanting to be able to be her true self.
Along with her upbeat tracks came equally jaw-dropping ballads. ‘I Love You For Me’ and ‘You Don’t Look At Me The Same’ had fans captivated by every note, not only by her impressive vocal range but by her heartfelt delivery. Most of the crowd hears something in Mimi’s writing that moves them, allowing them to share an experience or emotion with her. Notably, these two songs had all eyes locked on her, absorbing every second.
Just as easily as the audience loved these, they were ecstatic to jump around to the next tracks. Mimi ultimately proved herself to be a compelling pop artist, strutting around the stage with the utmost confidence, as if it were her second home. ‘My go’ gave the crowd their chance to embody some of this feeling of empowerment themselves. Dancing with a sultry flair, whipping her hair and hitting pose after pose, she was born for the spotlight.
After hearing ‘Red Flags’ it felt like the energy couldn’t get any higher, but once Mimi left the stage, the room erupted into chanting her name. Quickly, she came back ready to give her all for her final songs, ‘House Fire’ and ‘Mind Reader’. Ending the night on one final reminder of why she’s one of the most exciting rising stars.
