Goth-Rock Revival: Venus Grrrls Release 'Ivy Tree'

Venus Grrrls are a group who continue to push boundaries, with their latest release ‘Ivy Tree’ showcasing their multiple musical abilities.

It hooks you in from the very beginning and is a great advert for modern gothic rock. The lyrics set the tone for the rest of the track incredibly well, encapsulating themes of independence and exploring relationship dynamics, such as “Poison in my ivy tree”, insinuating that the lead singer wants to live freely.

It is reflective of the band’s advocacy for the inclusion of women and feminism, topics that are of high importance. Many elements make this a great rock song, such as a solid foundation in the form of a good beat from drummer Alannagh Doherty, whilst lead singer Grace Kelly showcases her impressive vocals throughout.

The strong rhythm is accompanied by a commendable solo from lead guitarist Eliza Lee towards the end, which enhances the build-up to the final chorus.

Reminiscent of bands such as Halestorm or The Pretty Reckless, Venus Grrrls have a powerful sound and are definitely one to look out for, whilst ‘Ivy Tree’ is a must listen.
