Chappell Roan recently released the highly anticipated fan-favourite ballad, ‘The Subway’, and this has reinforced what we already knew - Roan is a force to be reckoned with.
Following the success of her album, ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess', fans eagerly awaited new music from Roan. Having debuted this single at the New York Governor’s Ball last June, it was only a matter of time until this beautiful ballad was released, and the wait was certainly worth it.
This track is nothing if not raw and vulnerable. Alongside Roan’s gorgeous vocals is a heartbreaking narrative - the singer has run into her ex-partner on the subway, and has been consequently reminded of her heartbreak. Even though time has passed, these memories linger like a ghost - the wound is still fresh. With poignant lyrics such as ‘’I made a promise, if in four months this feeling ain’t gone/Well fuck this city, I’m moving to Saskatchewan’’, the impact heartbreak has on an individual is explored intricately. The feeling of heartache is so severe that one is willing to completely change their lifestyle - no price is too high to pay when it means that suffering is left behind.
With this release, it is evident that Chappell is deserving of her title as one of pop music’s biggest powerhouses currently. Her beautiful vocals mixed with genius lyrics are one of a kind - it is clear that Roan’s biggest love is her art. ‘The Subway’ is yet another excellent track from Chappell, perfectly encapsulating the multitude of emotions experienced post-heartbreak.
