Intoxicatingly Heartfelt and Poignantly Introspective: Genevieve Miles Releases ‘Sweet To Be Alone’

With a musical ethos fostered upon raw, heartfelt storytelling, Genevieve Miles is no stranger to explicitly bearing her innermost emotional workings, set to the backdrop of shimmering instrumentation.

With an increasingly burgeoning discography, the 25th of July saw the further expansion of Miles’ artistic canon, with the release of her newest track, ‘Sweet To Be Alone’.

A single that swims in the lapping seas of shoegaze, ‘Sweet To Be Alone’ details the vulnerable intricacies of heartache whilst also acting as a therapeutic and cathartic release for the Birmingham based singer-songwriter. Capturing emotions of anger, hurt and fragility as easily as butterflies in a net, ‘Sweet To Be Alone’ poignantly bottles up feelings of relationship strife in a moreish four minutes, with Miles’ lustrous vocals taking centre stage as the single reaches its tail end. Through introspective lyrics such as ‘there’s something kind of magic, having your own body to hold’, Miles simultaneously makes the freedom of finally being relinquished from such a conflict almost palpable. Such lyrics, when combined with sultry, smoky instrumentation, has resulted in a heartfelt number that is as unfaltering as it is intoxicating.

Fresh off the back of sets at Birmingham’s newest all day festival, What’s Happening? Digbeth and Oxfordshire’s Riverside Festival, Miles and her five piece band now look ahead to the imminent release of her EP, set for release in October. If ‘Sweet To Be Alone’ is anything to go by, then the EP undoubtedly promises to be an equally dreamy and ethereal affair.
