In anticipation for her upcoming debut album, ‘The Starrr of the Queen of Life’, Debby Friday (Deborah Micho) has released her latest single and music video, ‘Bet On Me’.
Following the release of previous singles ‘Lipsync’, ‘All I Wanna Do Is Party’ and ‘1/17’, Friday has taken a more whimsical, aspirational tone with ‘Bet On Me’, focussing on self-dependence and the importance of recognising challenges when it comes to chasing dreams.
She says of the track: “Life can be so dizzy and it’s easy to spiral into living a reality that you don’t actually want. This song is an ode to intuition and raw self-belief, to betting on yourself.”
‘Bet On Me’ is seemingly a mantra of sorts, laden with repeated phrases and choruses of voices (“You’ve gotta want it lots, lots, lots, lots, lots, lots, lots, lots, lots, lots, lots, lots, lots!”). Meanwhile, the dizziness that Friday refers to is beautifully reflected in her accompanying music video, which sees us spinning around backstage at Toronto’s Massey Hall in a kaleidoscope of blurry lights and shimmering eyeshadow.
The entire effect is one of almost euphoric discombobulation: disoriented, but at peace with it, which is perhaps what Debby Friday is experiencing right now.
The Nigerian-Canadian songstress has been making a name for herself on her first UK and EU tour supporting SPELLLING, meanwhile releasing a slew of singles, each exploring a new sound in her particular style of breathy, ethereal electronic-pop.
Her range is undeniable, both in her music and in her voice, and her capability to effortlessly combine conflicting feelings in her lyrics shines, especially on ‘Bet On Me’: “It’s closer than you think / It’s farther than you thought / More easy than you know / You’ve gotta want it lots.”
Delivered in a subdued yet trilling style reminiscent of a PinkPantheress track, this ear worm will undoubtedly become something hummed under the breath of listeners, which is perhaps the perfect result for a song as aspirational as this one.
Debby Friday’s debut album ‘The Starrr of the Queen of Life’ will be released on 1st August. You can pre-save the album here.
