On the lead up to their brand new album ‘WHERE DID ALL THE BUTTERFLIES GO?’, Beauty School Dropout have released their third single ‘SEX APPEAL’.
Made up of Colie Hutzler, Beepus, Bardo and Colton Flurry, the American rock band are evolving their sound, blending genres and capturing their chaos and vulnerability.
They’ve made an impact particularly through live shows already, after touring with Jaden Hossler, Maggie Lindemann and of course blink-182, who they’re set to support again later in the year. Along with their headlining tour around Europe in September they’re ready to leave a long lasting impression.
‘SEX APPEAL’ is a romantic and sensual sounding track full of reckless passion and youthful rebellion. Colie’s intoxicating vocals come in strong, cutting through the initial slow pace of the instrumental, setting the tone for the song. His delivery dips between seductive and insistent, capturing the emotional highs and lows of escapism. Punchy drums and subtle electronic elements create the edgy and dark feel, along with the driving rhythm that adds a sense of urgency to mirror the track's themes.
Upon first listen the deeper meaning behind the lyrics might be overlooked, at face value ‘SEX APPEAL' is about finding a rush and cheap highs. With lyrics like “We could pack your things up, leave this town” and “We could fake our death and stay in bed” it becomes more clear it’s about the desire to run from reality - to escape, in this case with temporary fixes. The main chorus “High / Like we’re standing on stilts” only emphasises this instability of the high and the idea that things could collapse at any moment.
Beauty School Dropout also released a music video alongside the track, featuring singer-songwriter Royal & the Serpent. Depicting their rebel-like rockstar energy with the thrill of a heist, as a viewer we see the adrenaline of living on the edge, chasing a feeling.
