With all thirteen of the band’s previous studio albums charting in the top 40, The Charlatans hope to add another to the tally, following the recent announcement of the release of their fourteenth album, ‘We Are Love’. Scheduled for release on 31st of October via BMG, ‘We Are Love’ is an 11-track chronicle, with the album’s title track recently being debuted at Manchester’s Castlefield Bowl.
Succeeding in being both swaggering and melodic, the single ‘We Are Love’ brims with soul power grooves and sonic riffs. Encapsulating a shimmering instrumentation that features the band’s longstanding penchant for the Hammond organ, ‘We Are Love’ spins warmly between pop and psychedelia. Despite lyrics which sway between the optimistic and the not so, such as “my glass half empty, yours half full”, the track is a jubilant comeback for Madchester’s survivors. Encapsulating all the artistic features that contributed to The Charlatans ever enduring regard, whilst simultaneously omitting a newfound sureness, ‘We Are Love’ serves to forebode an equally iridescent, impassioned album.
A single that swims in west coast melodies , ‘We Are Love’ is a lush, swirling number, made for the stage. Boasting a layered and intricate production, that was partly finetuned at the renowned Rockfield Studios, ‘We are Love’ can also be christened as a poignant stepping stone for the band. Their first return to the Welsh recording studio since keyboardist Rob Collins died in a car crash, during the recording process for their acclaimed fifth album, ‘Tellin’ Stories’, ‘We Are Love’ marks a significant turning point for the fourpiece, both emotionally and creatively. A recent redefinition for a place once soaked in tragedy, the band’s newest release can be heralded as a triumphant return, from the band which refuses to die.
In addition to the release of ‘We Are Love’, The Charlatans have also announced a six date tour across the UK in December, tickets for which can be found here.
