As a member of Day Soul Exquisite, a Seattle-based band touring this summer, this project presents an opportunity for Tahar to showcase her individuality on a new level, sharing with us the incredibly imaginative ways in which her musical mind works. Within this project lies the single ‘Shapeshifter’, a creation that weaves between the dimensions of music and thought, enjoyment and philosophy.
The single is not only a tribute to Tahar’s jazz background but also her interest in the work of Italo Calvino, particularly the collection ‘Cosmicomics’. This literature acts as a narrative backbone for ‘Shapeshifter’, imagining herself as the protagonist of his stories.
Working between the lines of literature and music not only draws on their intrinsic harmony but also showcases Tahar’s ability to take from each other and build something even more beautiful, engaging with mediums in such a unique way.
It begins with an electronic lo-fi beat, a collection of rhythmic waves coming together to form this ocean of sound Tahar is remarkable at executing. In combination with illusive and somewhat ethereal vocals, the track moves into another dimension. It explores the art of falling, of moving from one thing into another with a certain textured beauty. The lyrics sing “Let’s get away / Let’s go someplace” repeatedly engaging us with each vocal intonation. There remains such a prominent sense of individuality merged with fluidity between words in this section, one that perfectly encapsulates this fall Tahar hopes to step into.
As the piece builds to its jazzy, echoing finale, we are reminded of the art of construction that this track demonstrates. It builds instruments into one another, seamlessly swimming through the vocals. The lyrics are given a space of their own, regardless, a skill almost impossible to achieve in such an exceptional manner —an incredible piece of musical prowess.
