Conan Gray Emerges From Cocoon With ‘This Song’

Contrasting his recent releases, Conan Gray has returned to his roots, releasing a soft-indie track titled ‘This Song’. The indie pop-star gained his audience through YouTube videos and various songs that gained traction on social media platforms, such as ‘Heather’, 'Memories', and 'Maniac’.

Thus far in his career, he has become known for songs that encapsulate themes of love, yearning and important relationships - romantic and platonic. Famously, Gray used to state that he had never been in a relationship, feeling envious of love.

‘This Song’ takes his previous thoughts and crushes them with a mallet.  Finally, his music expresses feelings of love and affection that could soundtrack a coming-of-age film. This single is a callback to the bedroom-pop days of the late 2010s, fuelled by artists like ClairoWallows, and Gray himself - all of whom are set to have a big year.

The dreamlike track is three and a half minutes long, and though the feelings of love have arrived, it is still infused with yearning. The sweet, comforting, strings-filled track is an ode to the little things in romance, with lyrics like: ‘Your brown racer jacket / My hands through the sleeves / The smell of your perfume / Is all over me’. The vulnerability laced throughout the track is not uncommon in Conan Gray’s music and blends seamlessly with the dreamy, soft instrumental.

As the first single from his upcoming album ‘Wishbone’, Gray appears to hint at a comeback to the calm, romantically sad music that fans can relate to all too well. ‘This Song’ is the perfect blossoming to a new era, placing a romantic backdrop to the setting of ‘Wishbone’, which releases August 15thvia Republic Records.
