Sharp And Unapologetic ‘Leave Me Alone’ By Reneé Rapp Bites Back

Almost two years since her debut album ‘Snow Angel’, accompanied by the Snow Hard Feelings Tour, Reneé Rapp is back.

Fans have clearly missed her music in her absence, flooding her comments with excitement after she teased her upcoming album ‘Bite Me’ in a TikTok. Reneé dropped ‘Leave Me Alone’ as her first single in preparation, and it’s the perfect controlled chaos she needed to showcase her personality, which fans already adore.

Her free-spirited and bold energy radiates off this single as she enters a new era, moving away from her powerful and emotional vocals seen previously. The track is a light-hearted and unapologetically candid commentary on her life, all about having fun.

Leave Me Alone’ channels a “bad girl” energy reminiscent of early 2010s pop music, particularly Kesha’s. With a cheeky, rebellious flair emphasised in Reneé’s delivery of lines such as “Sign a hundred NDAs, but I still say something”, it’s a major shift in her sound. Producing a more club-like feel with loud drums and a playful attitude, along with subtle funk undertones, it’s definitely the track to get a party started. Her incredibly catchy chorus paired with more conversational verses that repeat “leave me alone, bitch, I wanna have fun” keeps the track engaging and surprising whilst emphasising her carefree confidence. By adding laughter into the background of the track, it strengthens the sense of fun and sass throughout, giving the song its edge.

Reneé has never been afraid to speak her mind, and this song definitely doesn’t hold back, calling out her manager, fans, exes and even her past acting role. Originally planned to be called Cannonball, which Reneé revealed on Instagram, the chorus invites you into her messy world, “I’m so sick of it all / come get wet in the deep end / take it off, cannonball”. It’s a metaphor for diving headfirst into a decision without thinking; in this case, it’s to just have fun and not take life so seriously.

Fans were also lucky enough to get a music video alongside the track. It starts in a grainy documentary style, capturing Reneé and her friends entering a club before she knocks herself into a dream state. We see her surrounded by doppelgängers having pillow fights on a large bed as though they’re at a sleepover, but it’s not long before they start fighting for real, leaving Reneé smiling at the end with her mouth filled with blood. Visually, it captures the inner mayhem that this new music has in store, reflecting the messy mindset behind it, as Reneé sits on a cluttered floor surrounded by feathers from the pillows that fly around her.

‘Leave Me Alone’ is just the beginning of this new wave of music, and if it’s any indication of what’s to come, then ‘Bite Me’ is going to be even more charismatic and fierce. With this track, Reneé is now proving herself as not only an insane vocalist but a confident and energetic performer.
