Seven Questions With Dummy

Known for cutting-edge, hypnotic indie rock ('Nine Clean Nails') and spinning 90s-infused soundscapes ('Alluvial Fan'), Los Angeles quintet Dummy are shaking up the music scene with the release of their ambitious third record, 'do you love the color of the sky?'.
Pegged as an "anti-zeitgeist" project, Dummy boldly dive into climate activism ('April Limousine'), the devaluation of art at the hands of AI ('Full Spectrum Dominance'), and state-ordered surveillance ('N of 1').

We chat with guitarist Joe Trainor about the duality of learning new songs, opening for his favourite band, and 'do you love the color of the sky?' as part of the Seven Questions with Music Is To Blame Series.

Introduce yourself and where you’re from.
Hi, my name is Joe. I am from Maryland, but I live in LA currently. I play guitar in Dummy.

What do our readers need to know about you?
Abolish ICE, Free Palestine, and working-class solidarity

What have you got coming up that you’re most excited for?
Dummy has our 3rd LP 'do you love the color of the sky?' out now, and along with that, we are working on the live arrangements for all the touring we will have coming up late this year and all of next year. It’s been fun and frustrating to learn how to play the new songs.

What’s the best run-in you’ve had with a fan?
For me, anytime someone comes up to me and says a kind word, be it at a show, after we play, or out in the real world, it means the world.

What’s been your biggest ‘I’ve made it’ moment so far?
I don't think we've "made it” per se, but I am very grateful for opportunities we have gotten, like opening up for one of my favourite bands of all time, Botch, playing fests all over Europe, having artists I/we respect DMing up and saying they dig our music; those are the most meaningful. Also, playing KEXP on our first record was quite wild to all of us, and scary.

What are your three “desert island” albums?
My Bloody Valentine 'EP's 1988–1991' compilation
Frank Ocean 'Blonde'
'Kankyō Ongaku: Japanese Ambient, Environmental & New Age Music 1980-1990'

Sum up your sound in three words.
Miasmic, Adventurous Pop
