Following on from the release of singles ‘Bang Bang Bang’ and ‘Cult of Celebrity’, tracks ‘Split’ and ‘The Basement’ take us through fragile masculinity, the ‘manosphere’ and the turbulent spiral of a drink.
With ‘Split’, Lambrini Girls reflect on the trials and perils of alcohol. With a softer approach than their usual feisty, punching and kicking sound, and exchanges it for a softer, acoustic, more melancholic melody, as if it were the hangover from the morning after a rambunctious night out. Frontwoman Phoebe Scully yearns as she sings of ‘‘Tomorrow’s happiness’’ pushing it all down, making this track something of one of longing, heartbreak, and drowning your sorrows, a welcome contrast to the Lambrini Girls we normally know.
‘The Basement’ is nothing but sheer contrast. "With a house on a hill " starts this track, painting an almost idyllic image before switching over quickly, telling us how destroyed and mutilated that this house has become, turning into ‘The Basement’ of this horror house. The song challenges the ever-growing ideologies of the ‘manosphere’, harmful theories such as ‘The red pill’ theory, and how this movement of online subculture has swallowed up so many innocent people. Backed by a steady backbeat and sludgy, overdriven guitar, proving the strongest backbeat whilst Scully projects this story of a hell house.
Lambrini Girls have announced dates for their 2027 North American tour kicking off in March/April next year. Their album ‘No Refunds’ is available from January 15th via City Slang.
