Singer-songwriter Katie Gregson-MacLeod has released the fourth single for her upcoming debut album ‘Albatross’. The Inverness-born artist shot up in popularity when her single ‘Complex’ became an international success online. While the contemporary and emotional sounds of ‘Complex’ caught the attention of audiences, Gregson-MacLeod has maintained skilful lyricism and gentle vocals throughout her career.
Her recent single, ‘Sometimes’, opens with a soft anti-folk guitar twang and ushers in her unique vocals. The song remains stripped back and focuses on guitar until the introduction of quiet, harmonious strings, as Gregson-MacLeod delves deeper into the emotion of the song. The core of the song reminisces about the potential of a past relationship, occasionally looking back at what could have been. Whether it was good or bad, it doesn't matter; the pair tried, and it simply couldn't work: “Something's lost where certainty resides / So we don't kiss goodbye / I don't think it could have been real even if we tried / And that's fine sometimes”. The miscommunication and displacement of love seems to be a key theme throughout her discography, setting this single up for a perfect seat within it.
Growing from some of her most popular music and creating a maturity in her discography, the way she has grown within her writing does set this single apart from songs like ‘Second Single Bed’ and even the aforementioned ‘Complex ’. There is a delicacy and carefulness surrounding the song that can only be fuelled by patience and growth.
Ultimately, this single indicates an excitement for her debut album, releasing next month on the 6th of November, setting prospects for what could be her best piece yet.
