It's set to be a big year for Welsh artist GWEN as she releases double single ‘Digon / GOTH’ in the run-up to her debut album ‘UMA’.The double single, produced as a solo project by Gwenllian Anthony, co-founder of the post-punk indie band Adwaith, shows a heavier, more shoegazy side to her style.
‘Digon’, the first song on the double single, draws dreamy and ethereal vocals together with space-age-style synth. It flows beautifully through emotive dreampop while hinting at electronic elements seen more frequently in ambient music. Paired with fuzzy guitar and bass, GWEN creates a surreal landscape filled with anticipation, emotion, and warmth, pulling listeners into her music.
The second song, ‘GOTH’, immerses the listener in a vampy, textured, and distorted reality. Crashing cymbals lay a bed for the reverby vocals and driven bass lines, allowing them to merge into the surreal landscape alongside ‘Digon’. It continues the space-age motif set out at the start, which keeps the single consistent, while adding more depth and energy. ‘GOTH’ aptly feels like ‘Digon’’s even cooler alternative older sister.
GWEN reps Wales in this single, with lyrics written entirely in Welsh/Cymraeg. This lean into her roots adds an even more personal touch to an already mesmerising single.
