Blondie’s self-titled debut arrived in 1976, at a time where punk was still in its defining years. More than fifty years later, the band have announced their twelfth album, ‘High Noon’, and its opening track ‘Spectral Eyes’ still refuses to be pinned to one sound.
Grounded in a single recurring riff, penned and played by Johnny Marr, it calls back to the early 1980s sound that made the band so well known without relying on nostalgia. ‘Spectral Eyes’ is abuzz with energy, bringing elements of new-wave stylings together with who each artist is now. Stein’s edged rhythm and Burke’s energetic beat guide, while Harry’s cool, nasal vocals anchor the song, sitting against Marr’s shimmering, bright guitars. The track is shaped by these signature individual elements while still bringing something new.
A hypnotic draw of a “celestial smile” is not just a lyrical hook, but a comment to the track’s optimistic lure. The otherworldly eyes that chase short-lived thrills and fight against mundane boundaries are the very essence of what the band have always delivered—an adventurous, rebellious spirit that wasn't afraid to dip into different genres.
‘High Noon’ doesn’t just mark the return of Blondie, but also the final studio recordings of co-founder Clem Burke, who sadly passed in 2025, making the release even more poignant for fans.
The full album is set for release February 26th 2027, via BMG. Pre-save here.
