Basht. have never been silent about their political views, making sure people hear them. Their latest single ‘Kids Vs Guns’ doesn’t steer away from this as they tackle the wider issues that are incredibly relevant in our world today. It’s a part of their soon-to-be-released debut album ‘Poor Advice’ and makes a statement from the first note.
The band posted on Instagram that the song stemmed from a poem they wrote. The powerful song addresses the current war in Palestine, specifically the deaths of children that are being brushed over by the media. The lyrics use stark comparisons like “Bottle rockets met with missiles / Soldiers marching in parade / Children starving on the TV / How many minds are left to change?” This honesty makes the song both brutal and powerful to listen to. It reflects on the ignorance that society possesses and its choice to ignore the genocide happening right before our eyes. Basht. ask the right question in this single: how far must things go before change is made and help is provided to the innocent people whose lives are being lost?
Opening with the guitar resounding on its own creates an uncomfortable sound. It’s not meant to be a happy song; it’s a statement. A piece that should prompt reflection and realisation by confronting the issues that some choose to ignore. Towards the chorus, the repeated riff and drum line build before the song slows. It brings back the harsh reality of the situation with lyrics like “It’s a silent execution,” then builds back to the song’s breaking point. Its sound embodies the disaster that the song describes. If people continue to choose ignorance, given how many people are being killed currently, it’ll be too late.
This song takes a different route from Basht.’s other releases; it starts slow and keeps that pace for a lot of the song. Jack Leavey’s vocals guide the song, taking a gentler approach as every word he sings is heard. The quiet drum beat and the way it all comes together make the song feel like it’s leading listeners toward something. The result is a record that feels purposeful and politically engaged. The song’s thoughtful construction lets listeners fully appreciate Basht.’s versatility.
It’s so important that artists keep speaking up about current affairs. All art is political, and Basht. has created a poetic and powerful song that can’t be ignored. In a time when many people with an audience don’t speak out or use their voice to drive change or raise awareness, it’s refreshing and promising to see more artists doing so. Based on the singles released so far, Basht.’s debut album is set to be exceptional and will be released on October 9th.
