Named after the iconic Friends character Phoebe Buffay, Hobert’s ‘Phoebe’ is a vulnerable depiction of insecurity and a sense of isolation from your peers. With the chorus stating “cause why else would you want me? / I think I’ve got a fucked-up face”, the song is an instant insight into Hobert’s personal insecurities. The song is a perfect representation of Hobert’s lifelong struggle with self-confidence, pivoting into her embracing her quirkiness after experiencing the character’s unapologetic self. As the song progresses, she states “who cares if I’m pretty? / I feel like I’m Phoebe”, finally letting go of her self-inflicted pressure to be traditionally perfect.
Over a year after the song’s release, Hobert recently brought out a self-directed music video of ‘Phoebe’. The video combines stunning imagery of woodlands and beaches, whilst depicting Hobert on a journey of self-discovery. Her choice of setting the video amongst nature shows Hobert literally removing herself from the societal pressures of everyday life and the digital world. It is the perfect combination of emotional isolation and deadpan humour, whilst cleverly yet gradually showing her embracing her individuality. Both the song and video are a refreshing change in current media, with Hobert’s relatability making her stand out as a unique new voice in the pop industry.
Hobert’s ’Phoebe’ music video is the perfect follow-up to her debut album, illustrating the album’s core focus on social isolation and fundamental awkwardness in a world of apparent perfection.
