‘Cailín’ will pay homage to Nash’s Irish roots, with ‘Spilt Milk’ being about abortion laws in the Republic of Ireland – abortion was strictly illegal here from 1861 until January 2019, when the Irish president repealed the Eighth Amendment in May 2018.
Nash explains: “It’s about not having control over your own body, not being listened to and feeling like the powers that be are getting bigger, scarier and more crushing.”
Emotive and dripping with sarcasm, lines like: “Don’t, don’t cry, cry / Over spilt milk” see Nash poke fun at those “powers” who tell women “not to worry” when their identity, human rights, and freedoms are stripped away from them. Further lyrics, such as: “Well, how come they’re in charge? How come they get to say no?” simply yet fiercely depict the speaker’s anger at political establishments.
‘Spilt Milk’ is very much a modern-noise punk-pop track. It combines distorted bass lines, jungle-esque drum beats, and deliberately hostile, shouty, spoken-word vocals. As a result, it has the contemporary anarchiness of the Lambrini Girls and the driven punk-vocal precision of an Amyl and the Sniffers number.
The track is, therefore, a far cry from Nash’s light and breezy 2007 breakthrough hit, ‘Foundations’. It is written and delivered with a political rawness and textured vocal that has not been seen since the likes of Sinéad O’Connor or The Cranberries’ frontwoman, Dolores O’Riordan. Nash will also feature a cover of O’Connor’s 1994 single ‘Famine’ on her upcoming album.
‘Cailín’ is set for release on 22nd January 2027 via Kill Rock Stars.
