The track opens with a hefty drum set, immediately setting a hard-hitting tone, before the band’s lead singer Sophie McMinn breaks into song. She sings critically of an unidentifiable subject in ambiguous, conflicting lines: “You’re so cool / You’re a star / You’re so fake”, adding to the intensity established early by the musical arrangement as we hear potent emotion come through in her mesmerising vocals.
Electronic effects atop a traditional lineup of instruments - played by drummer Dylan Hughes, bassist Harry Van Der Meer and guitarist Adam Hurt - create a futuristic backdrop for McMinn’s melodic frustrations. After the first chorus finishes, she dials back her lyricism to allow this avant-garde composition to shine, simply repeating “at all” with a digital filter over her voice, heightening both the tune’s danceability and evocativeness at once with this hypnotic feature.
High-energy, dynamic, and deeply moving: ‘Star’ is an exciting addition to the steadily growing catalogue of an exciting new underground band. Sophie’s Body are ones to watch - their innovative, genre-defying sound is certainly set to soon be selling out venues.
