The single blends some glittery acoustic sounds in guitar and vocals with much heavier grungy sections and layered harmonies, resulting in a song that also very much feels like a lived-in journey. It has a certain elevated, hectic feel about it, which is wholly intentional, as lead vocalist August Tse explains, “It’s about dealing with the initial blow of a life changing experience.”, something which many find they identify with, especially with the fast-paced changes in the world today. The band has a largely young audience, who are navigating big life changes and lessons.
The chorus’ lyrics open with “You met me / At the wrong time / Singing mercy alone”, as the song’s subject is in the thick of their difficulties whilst dealing with everyday life passing by, as Tse puts it brilliantly, “… meeting someone in the wreckage before you’ve managed to make sense of things.”
The track’s production is superb, and has had some obvious thought behind it. It’s easy to imagine that ‘Mercy!’ performed live could sound almost identical to this recording, and it’s not surprising that a strong live band such as Tough Cookie would aim for this raw, intimate sound. The light guitar riff that runs throughout the song brings a light, playful nature to an otherwise heavy song, and Tse’s vocal capability allows a massive amount of emotional expression to be felt, cutting clearly through the melody.
