In anticipation of her upcoming sophomore album ‘PREMATURE NOSTALGIA’, Phoebe Green is back with a new single ‘Clothes Still On’. After the release of her debut album ‘Lucky Me’ ,which had polished indie-sleaze themes, she’s now moving into a more electronic genre that feels intense and unhinged.
This new track, made alongside the artist’s sister and collaborator Lucy Green (Elucyve), has a production style that combines 2000s emo guitar riffs with Alex-G-style indie rock in the verses, which then turns into a BROCKHAMPTON-influenced vocal stack for the chorus. With metallic synths and industrial sounds inspired by Manchester’s nightlife, the overall production creates a strangely enjoyable sound.
Through the lyrics, Green gives the listeners a very personal breakdown with lines like “I got naked when we first met / Clothes still on but my past spread open”, exploring the urge to overshare early on in a relationship. She balances dark humour with self-awareness, along with the very real feeling of craving affection while also being terrified of the possible bad effects of honesty
‘Clothes Still On’ is the perfect preview of ‘PREMATURE NOSTALGIA’, which is set to be a substantial 11-track project. It gives us clues about how the album is drenched in self-production and home-recorded rawness with a dramatic electronic sound. Green seems to be moving away from traditional pop and into an industrial era that combines confessional songwriting and a strong urge to record moments before they slip away.
