Gang of Youths fans are rejoicing at the band's return after a four-year hiatus, and with good reason. The Australian band has returned with a stunning new track ‘Things Take Time’, alongside the announcement of tour dates for Paris, Amsterdam, Manchester and London later this autumn and winter, giving fans plenty to celebrate.
The song is beautifully crafted, featuring soothing vocals from David Leaupepe and complementary strings, with layered instrumentation that gives it real depth. The stunning violin and cello work by Tom Hobden and Klara Schumann helps to carry the track along gracefully. The underlying trumpet and trombone provided by Nick Etwell and Dave Williamson also add extra warmth and texture to the song that elevate it to the standard fans expect from Gang of Youths. The classic instruments contribute an almost ethereal quality to the song that feels both expansive and intimate at the same time. The backbone of the song is the drums, keyboards, and bass guitar from Donnie Borzestowski, Jung Kim (also on guitar), and Andrew Burgess, all of which blend so easily together to keep the song so smooth and cohesive.
The lyrics, which repeatedly express the sentiment of “things take time”, capture the emotion the band must be feeling as they return, as well as their personal growth behind the scenes. The lyrics point towards a sense of gratitude, not only for other people but toward life in general, with “I kissed the Earth around me once / A thousand times”. The mix of appreciation and reflection gives the tune an extra layer of emotion; it’s quietly uplifting and motivational. It’s a song where, no matter the listener's mood, it works; it carries both emotional weight as well as a calming resolution.
If their other new music is as well produced and beautifully written as this track, fans are in for a fantastic year with Gang of Youths. The band seems ready to bring the melody, power and emotional intensity that fans know and that has made them such a compelling band both live and on record.
